Makarajyothi… the “divine” fire of cheating!!

On the eve of January 14th 2008, I got a chance to witness the Makaravilakku, ( Don’t mess it with Makarajyothy, which is the celestial light worshiped by the pilgrims, on the day of Makara Sankaranthi). And this is about Makaravilakku, the man made “divine” fire with the tight security of police), The mean time the myth is revealed by the Sabarimala thanthri himself, I think this scribblings won’t be unbelievable.

Ponnambalamedu, where the camphor blocks are lighted is just 4Km away from the Sabarimala temple,(see the map above). it is a really beautiful place with grass-caped hills and shola forests. For the makaravilakku ,at ponnambalamedu there is a permanent concrete platform and a big watch tower .This place is very near to Kochupamba ,where the Power substation is situated, Amidst the dense forest, The settlements are the Substation,Dam ,KSEB inspection bungalows and tribal colony.Sabarimala is powered from this substation situated in kochupamba. Kochupamba is serene beautiful place which is about 35km away from main highway to Sabarimala. Traversing the entire path across thick forest to Kochupamba is unforgettable. you can see the roads(colored red) to both Sabarimala (also see the secret road way directly reaches to Sannidanam -VIP’s come through this way with high security).The most notable thing is the jeep track ends near to Ponnambalamedu. Every year before the makaravilakku, this road is cleaned and cleared for the Travancore Devasom Board and police to reach there. Ponnambalamedu is at an elevation of 1170m above MSL, where as Sabarimala is just 544m. The view of Sannidhanam from Ponnambalamedu is disrupting,just like a city inside the thick,calm forest.

Day before the Makaravilikku, I reached the KSEB IB in kochupamba and stayed there, sharing the same lobby with the high police officials and the TDB officials. Amazingly,even the modern technologies for communication are there,They were still using the AIR transmission for the timing of the “vilakku” . They have been busy with fine tuning the transistor radio for the next day, proceedings. The TATA SUMO of TDB( Click to see the registration details of the vehicle-Some dummies needs proof at every point!!!!) contained a pile of camphor,sacks,kerosene etc was parking in front of the IB.

Starting..

On the morning January 14, the team consisting of three jeeps of armed police started roaming.But they didn’t enter to the Ponnambalamedu. After lunch,from the KSEB canteen at Kochupamba, the team started at 3:00′clock to Ponnambalamedu.

The adventure….

Locals,the Adivasis and the officials had the interest to see the fake play. Usually they trek to the hills near to Ponnambalamedu. I also got involved in this team.Half an hour trekking through the forest gave the scene of the mighty hill.( see the picture below).We seated there with a radio.

This video is shot by me with a digital camera, just a 500m away from the Ponnamabalamedu hill, when the first glow is on.If you watch the video carefully you can see persons moving and smoke is coming up ,when the fire is kept off with wet sacks. keep in mind that Sabarimala is at the valley of this hill. A forest fire is also seen in the frame,but it wasn’t been seen at Sabarimala

It became darker when the second glow is on.

I suppose the next Makaravilakku will be telecasted as live by our television channels directly from Ponnambalamedu,apart from the conventional telecast from Sabarimala and Pamba…:)…Swamyiye Saranamayyappa……

It was a well known fact in my childhood days, that the Makaravilakku was lit by Adivasis. Later when pilgrims from other states began to flood, TDB took over and with the help of KSEB and Police they made it look like a miracle. Even some 4 or 5 years back a retired DGP revealed the truth behind this in a television interview. The documentation and pictures are excellent. This reveals ” the investigative journalist” in Sinosh.

Makarasamkrathy is an astronomical feature worshipped by pilgrims, But Makaravillakku is the artificial one ( once it was believed as being lighted naturally), Which is now taken over by TDB for spiritual business.

our faith /belive of god is not depend on only Makaravilakku

we have to think logically that god is every where and Makaravilakku is the just symbolic reprsenting the god s presence in the hills . The pojas done by the tribals now it is under control of dewasam board and police officials .

just thinking that the Makaravilakku is fake so afterwards we will be not going to stop beliving or worshipping the the lord ayyapan ?????.

the revealtion of the Makaravilakku is just a fact and it is a good lesson to all of us stop blind beliving and use our logic that what is right and what is wrong.

“A light in dark is god” we need to understand the god in the form of light. Instead of searching the God at Ponnambala let us search in our hearts with Love and Pace.
Lord ayyapan is Light with in every body, We need to see him with Bakthi/Belief. Realize the GOD with in you.MakaraJyothi is symbolic presentation of GOD as light, Hindu’s, Muslims or Christians believe in light as God.
We have discovered that Jyothi presentation is true with facts of pictures and video’s. The realization of Light as God with in our hearts is very difficult,because we can’t present in either pictures or video’s.

Sinosh.
It has always been a facination for me about this Sacred Flame. Though now the fascination is kind of broken, the thrill of the forest is still astonishing. I have heard about the Aadhivasi’s etc but the origin of this custom is still a big question. Why did the Aadhivashi’s started this?

I have heard that sabarimala forest was onced dwelled by Tigers and Bears. Could you please brief a little on the **wild animals** that you encountered during your trip. As your trip appears to be at high altitude, possiblities of elephants could be minimal.

We need more from your words and pictures/videos.

Being western style education and using logicals that we currently believe as science is also a fake. 1+1 = 2 There are no things identitical in nature that science today tells you and you beleive and leave based on that.0 does not exists.These are simple tools you use and has common ground of understanding.

Sun arises and Sun sets,seasons repeat,there is some unbeleivable power that has control over all of us.People have good results in beleiving higher power than you.Thats the reason for centuries people beleive in higher power than us.When you are trouble reaching higher power has solved many peoples problems or atleast delivered serenity in situation where you expected to suffer.

Ayyappa diksha is best practices that are used to get rid of addictive behaviour from people and provide serenity to people who follow.This is very powerful diksha.Ayyapa diksha changed many peoples life,developed control in people for those neither sceince nor most loved,top professionals,laws cannot change.

In USA where you beleive its very powerful and good sceintific base towards world.Govertment refers to people who are addictive to similar program called AA.Its just relaxed version of Ayyappa diksha which has same priciples and more relaxed way.This has good results which Therapists,Hospitals abd Doctors could not chnage people.Govt forces people to adopt who caught up in system of doing something wrong.Its high time for educated people to encourage and discourage things based on our exposure.Exploration we can find drug or herb that cure.Just a thought we need to put when you find information does it lead any good.I am not complaining about exploration,its a great work and I am worried about the people who interpret this exploaration.

Ayyapa diksha is just a way group of people want to adopt Diksha which has very good results on human kind.To be practical you will never find people who can help many problems even simple addiction.No hospitals can cure and spiritual comes in place to solve the answers that you do not have.Sceintic reasoning cannot be applied and its not developed to that level but marketed very well.Everyone should respect other people beleives.SANTA is fake and used for marketing to increase sales for business community.There are different kinds people follow different styles to benefit.

Most advanced countries does war based on beleive.Everyone deserves respect and there is no fact and proof for Muslims,Cristians,Hinus etc…Just humans work with nature,relationships we create,beleives we do. How do you explain an eagle escorting the thiruvaabharanam from pandalam to sannidhanam and then vanoishing into the forest and then escorting back from sannidhanam to pandalam? Isn’t it surprising? All this effort to show the makaravilakku as a human lit fire should not shake up anyone’s faith in the Lord.

Actor (late) M.N.Nambiar, who was an ardent devotee of Ayyappa, had mentioned about this hoax years ago. But what about the fake miracles of Christian evangelists ? Many of these Christian miracles are fake & stage-managed. Late DGS Dinakaran Nadar of Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, used to claim that in one of his prayer meetings at DARJILING in the Himalayas, 35 LEPERS were cured of their leprosy instantaneously!!! It is intriguing why even a couple of the thousands of lepers in DGS’s home state of Tamil Nadu were NOT cured because of his prayers !!! Moreover, DGS’s only daughter (of course he has a son named Paul Dinakaran) was killed in a road accident at the age of 17 when they were going for missionary work ! Neither Jesus nor the Holy Ghost saved his daughter’s life. Further DGS & his wife sustained multiple fractures in that accident. This was despite the fact that DGS painstakingly preached the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world for nearly 50 years!!!

The celestial star is always there to see not just on this day.

All religions use trickery to get more followers, but that does not make it right. Santa is fake so are many other myths in many other religions. Religion is man made and now its pure commerce.

Makarajyothi is different and Makaravillkku is different that’s why there are two names. even me with my few friends had been to ponnambalamedu on last May with the help of few inhabitants at Gavi. nice experience. i wonder that still millions believe it as an annual miracle; on the other hand govt. make millions fool by leading such a drama. actually there should be intensive campaigns to aware people about the fact.

This ‘light’ miracle, in fact, follows yet another unexplained annual event. The ornaments of Lord Ayyappa, presiding deity of Sabarimala, are kept in the custody of the erstwhile Prince of Pandalam in his palace, 90 km from the temple. These are taken to the temple every year in a three-day-long procession. As the procession approaches the temple, an eagle is seen hovering over it, guiding it towards the sanctum sanctorum. Once the ornaments reach the temple, the eagle mysteriously disappears.

What is the proof that what you say is right ? We can take this photo’s from any where in the world and make it look like they were taken near Sabrimala.

Also Religion all over the world has its foundation on faith and trust if you do not have that why worry..go do something better in your life.

& leave the common man on this faith which guides him to lead his life in the correct way. Unless you have better ways of leading millions & millions of people to trust belief and have faith in something.

Makarajothi is true which is the true which appears on the sky appears after the Lord Ayyappa is weared with idols from his palace.

That star is true.that is 200% natural

Can you mention the exact route through which one can reach this place(Ponnambalamedu). I don’t want to visit this place during the Makaravilakku eve. I believe in GOD. Thanks for displaying such topics in the blog, so that common people will be aware of such fake activities and wont be cheated. I was working @ CESS from Sept2009 – Nov2009, and i got this info from there. I was really aback after knowing about the fake vilakk lit by devaswom board. It was shocking for me, when i heard about this. It took one week for me to come to normal stage. I just want to visit this place when everything is calm. I’m from earth science background and it multiplies my curiosity. Can you please mail me the route.

Narayanan Instead seeing reality you are coming up with some lame argument. This is a fraud and not about Hindus or christians or muslims. The temple authorities are confounding the public by now saying makara vilaku and makara jyoti are two separate things. They say Makara Jyoti is the celestial star it seems and vilaku is the man made light as sinosh has shown. Typical of these liars who derive their livelihood from the temple funds. Its a business generating more than 100 crores a year so the temple authorities with media complicity will continue living this lie. The stars are always there, it is not as if the star appears on this day only. The eagle is nothing but a trained bird. This is a scam. All religions make up miracles to fool the believers. Congrats on the expose Sinosh but as you can see from these comments faith is blind.

These findings don’t surprise me one bit, magicians pull off more extraordinary tricks and have people convinced without a shadow of doubt. Lighting a controlled fire at a location accessible to authorized personnel is relative DAMN SIMPLE.

However I would like to point out the ‘brighter’ side of this light. This light serves as a once in a year opportunity for millions of people to exercise their will power (mind) and their bodies in pursuit of a ‘divine’ light that gives them peace at the end of the journey. In other words people set a goal (even if its for that short duration) and seek satisfaction upon achievement of the goal.
And for this simple reason, its better to go along with this ‘hoax’. Two (or more) generations later perhaps its possible that people will be able to focus their energies in a different way (without religious attachments and rituals) at which time such hoaxes will meet a natural death.

More than the adventurous trip, the chats are very interesting. Some defending and some questioning. Difference between Makara Vilakku and Makara Jothi is another interesting topic being analyzed. Whatever, it is, good that some good discussions are going on, which is healthy.

My grand mother used to have a great insight in life. Way back in 70′s, she used to tell me that our Epics has mentioned about all scientific inventions. They are being followed as rituals instead of being learnt as technology. Few examples. She mentioned way back in 70′s that people will talk on phone without any cables. In 90′s we got the cell phones. She used to talk about the arrows between Arjun and Karna as two equipment which are equiped to travel a long way and hit the target which are defined (read programmed). We all witnessed during gulf war including Skud missiles. The live programs in TV is nothing but the definition of Sanjay in Mahabarath. She also mentioned about the ability to generate electricity from not only sun but also stars (purusha suktam) and today, you know that solar power has already became reality and electricity from stars are being explored.

You might wonder, where am I getting to? It is time to look at beyond what one sees or portrays, what is the technology or science behind every belief. True athiest will have great perseverence to find truth. The political athiest just gain by hurting the sentiments of all religion hence let’s not try some political talk.

Writing a couple of blogs, publishing photos, etc. are just the beginning but what will help by the author is to go deep into finding out how technologies that definitely existed in those epic days, can be brought back and make India a super power.

As a last note… if you look at the irony, it is Kerala where you could feel the two spiritual gurus flesh and blood, Lord Ayyappa and Adi Shankara. But that is the place where people got converted in masses, into both Islam and Christianity. Really surprising

The video shot from a distance of 500m (the vdo in the blog) shows the fire/flame with the same luminous intensity as seen from 5kms away (see popular TV broadcasts). This clearly breaks “Physics of luminosity”.

Other observations:

1. The two places Sabarimala and Ponnabalamedu are 4-5 kms apart from your finding
2. The light source should be at least 300-500 cd (candela is the unit of luminous intensity) to be visible from a few kms
3. Considering a 100 W incandescent light bulb emits about 120 cd, we need at least 250W – 420W?

Is this possible from a fire using camphor to match the light emitted by 250W – 420W bulb? How about the extreme heat and liquidation of the camphor?

Appreciate your effort in bringing things to light no matter what the intensions are.

I dont see any damage to the belief of Ayyappa Devotees and i dont think even if this is proved tomorrow a true devotee is gonna stop climbing the holy 18 stairs. I am not a rationalist neither am i a spiritual addict. I visit Sabarimala every year since my childhood and to tell you what no damage to the belief in Lord Ayyappa i carry in my heart happened irrespective of all these controversies. There are hundreds and thousands of Ayyappa temple around the world and millions of devotees. Do all of them beleive in the lord and worship him in temples scattered across the world because of the fact that Jan 14th there is a jyothi in the mountain. Of course not. So this myth is not gonna do damage to any belief.

Politics and corruption are another side of the business generated out of the running of the temple and keeping such myth active which i dont want to talk about in any forum because everybody knows that lord doesn’t want money. Then why blame government or devaswom when we know this fact and still accept when being exploited. We got to understand that lord dint make Sabarimala commercial and that eveybody has the right to preserve his faith without any damage to it. And faith is not something which gets lost watching a video or by arguments in a forum.

Beleive what you think is right as long as nobody gets harmed because of it.

But this is nothing new in what you have done, I have heard about this ritual that adivasi light this Makaravillaku long back from my guruswamy & other senior swamy. They have also mentioned that earlier it used to be a 5-10 min Makaravillaku.

Its only now after the confused new age English speaking media creating this hungama that it is fake, when we the ardent devotees of the Lord Ayyapa knew it all along that it was man made, But the fact is their is Makarajyothi the celestial star which comes every year religiously at the specific time & place & is never seen during other times.

For your information KSEB IB has some 4 to 5 rooms, where we stayed in a room as KSEB guests (for some reason i cant say how it happened ) and another two rooms, there were top officials of Police and TDB . Other policemen stayed at other small rooms in the area of KSEB substation( u might have seen some buildings around Kochupamba).It may be possible for u to visit Ponnambalmedu, if u can bribe the forest officials(ask at the check post at Kochupamba) who usually keeps multiple keys (will offer it on bribe) for the check post at the entry of kochupampa..

But be aware of elephants and bisons in the shola forest !!!

Truth or False, Does not matter really. Religion and God are something that can be debated forever. For people who believe in an unseen supreme force, there are multiple stimulants to strengthen the failth. For some it’s eating their lord’s flesh and drinking his blood and saying prayers, mass conversion of people(Spreading his word n’ glory) etc, For some it’s regular prayers, for some it’s the makaravilakku/jyothi.

It varies from person to person. However it’s also something that can be tweaked easily to exploit people. I would not like to bring my personal know how here about hinduism/other religions and make this dirty.

But, you do not have a right to be protected from your sentiments being hurt. I hear this “hurting sentiments” a lot. Some one tell me why it is a bad thing. Just as one has every right to glorify some thing, he/she should have the right to denounce. Recognize that it is only religion that demands this special treatment as in ” do not question, just accept”. Science, politics, economics, literature, entertainment, sports and most other walks of life accept scrutiny and criticism. So, if you are too sensitive about your faith, try to get over it.

Go through the facts below

1. You are able to see a red traffic signal beacon (now uses LED) in a long railway path within a range of 2 to 3 km. Can you tell the luminosity in cd of the same?. Consider that the said beacon light contain 100 LEDs, which takes 20mA each, a beacon can cover 2km with just the power of 2W!!!!.

2. Watt cannot be tied to the candela, bcoz of human eye’s differences in seeing various wavelengths of light. Since the human eye more catchy of red light, more wattage is needed to produce the same result in the brain as with yellow or green light. This is why the definition of candela is defined as a very specific hertz, unachievable in actual common lighting.

3.Yourself is aware of extreme heat and liquidation of the camphor, it is correct that aromatics burn with high temperature and with red tint, so just derive the rest!!!!

What you said about the pond (known as seethakulam) is correct, but ask your friend again that whether he have visited ponnambalamedu.. . I haven’t seen any temple there. Moreover you can go through the topographic sheet (map) given, it don’t have a sign of a temple.

At least after this stampede tragedy the temple authorities and the govt should tell the people that the makarajyothi is
a man made fire.The lighting should be shown for a longer time so that there is no mad rush to witness it which could have caused the stampede.if people know it is man made they would be more relaxed.the fie lighting at thiruvannamalai is an example.in fact i believe that a lot of people going to ayyappa temple know it is a fire lit by the temple authorities.it is not the only reason they go there.The govt and the temple authorities must act boldly.In this day and age we cannot be perpetrating miracles

I would like to say if the 102 had known about this atleast their kids and women might not have been in darkness as they are now.
Reading the news about the accident yesterday remebered about a doubt from childhood which came to mind eversince I heard my neighbour, a muslim policeman, talking about that non-hindu’s are not allowed to serve nearby ponnambalamedu during these times. Their superiors shift them to some other places during these times thogh they can serve nearby other times. I started thinking why do they do so if it is really devine.

Now yl reading the accident news, again after a couple of decades i started asking the same qstn again, then i thot of asking google.Google brot me here and it is clear from this and many other infos in web that the Govt. and Dewaswam board had clarified it is lit by humans as symbolic to a belief, though a few heard.

The fact is that most of the people especially from outside the kerala are not aware this official statement. I appreciate your effort. I agree that makara joythi or celestial happening on the hillock which is been telecasted is a Big question mark and cannot be concluded so easily.

Visting Sabarimala and seeking his blessings is almost generation Now.

2010 Jan 14 I have been to pullmedu ( pandi thavalama) to witness the makara jothi because of curosity and it was my 18th year to sabarimala and anxious to know the truth from my childhood. The pullmedu is located at an altitude of 1200 meter high and right spot to witness the event. Here there is forest officer quarter s and communication tower located.
We reached this spot around 12.30 pm waited around six hour. We asked the forest officer on which mountain the joythi appears and he showed us the mountain. The mountain has a cave in which is covered by trees which is very clear during day time. This mountain can be viewed from sannidhanam just opposite to the Holy 18 steps.

Note: the said spot can be view at google Map.

Around 6.45 pm we could see a light three times appearing on mountain between the said area but we could not see any human moving around there. if it all human moving with flame it a can be easily seen from that view. And lakhs of people’s eye sight is on that spot. Some people were recording with cameras, some viewing with Binoculars lens.
But we were able see some celestial thing twinkle twice below the north eastern star and we got confused with the two event s the one in between the slope of the mountain ( Cave) or in sky below the star. Later I asked the forest officer, he confirmed that what you witness below the star is true not between mountains top which is telecast to people these are fake.
So we have to believe the forest officer because they stay and patrol the forest every day. So I have decided to come next time prepared with good cameras and record both the events.
Star which appears is called as north eastern star ( Dhruva nakastra) which is seen all days in the sky is the closet and brightest star seen to our naked eyes. During makara sankrama the sun changes it direction towards north direction which is called as utharayana. Due to the brightness of sun due to change in direction no other stars are seen except north eastern star to our naked eyes.

Ponnambalamedu:

Camphor burnt on the concrete platform which you have mentioned ( ponnambalamedu). Also you have said there is pond and no temple around that is true.
For your kind information there was a temple (Dharma shasta Kavu) at ponnamabalamedu before the incarnation of ayyappan, which is installed by Parashurama much earlier than lord Rama story. Infact by Parashurama installed Dharma shasta idol in eight direction to proctect the sages and Rishis . And one of them was at ponnambalamedu.
This temple was destroyed by Udayan a Bandit who was living near the foot hills of Karimala , ichipara Kota and Thalapara kotta.
People from pathalam, rishis and Adivasi used to go and worship Lord Dharma shastha . even Panthalam king has offered his prayers to Shasta to bless them for a child.
Please Note:
The ritual of carrying Irumudi to Shasta temple was there before incarnation of Ayyappan.
The concrete Platform which you have visited is the land mark of Shasta temple or Sri moola of Shasta. Now the Priest from sabarimala accompanied by forest officers visit this place and rituals are done. i.e this why you can see the Camphor burned marks this Marks has lead to misconception.

History:
To elaborate Ayyappan is the incarnation of Dharma shastha Similary lik Krishan and Rama are the incarnation of Mahavishu . Ayyapan who was born and brought up in panthalam the story which we all know.
Ayyapan story is around 1200-1300 A.D. i.e when the Pandians Kings were once the ruler of madurai were defeat by the Muslim invasion by 1100 A.D. there after they have to leave Maduri and later shifted and were living in Panthalam.
Ayyapan (formerly called as Manikandan) was a adopted son of Panthalam king who lived with them for 12 to 14 years and later took sanyasam and went o exile to forest and was living in sabarimala.
The present temple with holy 18 steps was once the hermitage of lord ayyapan who was living there with his companions like Kocha kadutha swami, velliakadutha swami, and Karapa swami.
Adivasi around used to visit manikandan and offer him with fruits with love affection. Manikandan who was known for knowledge , wisdom etc would answer there question .. later they called him as ayyappan a man with full of Knowledge, or God .
After the end of incarnation ( i.e transmission of Human form to Divine form during the auspicious time Makara sankaram) A temple with 18 steps was built by the King as per the instructions in remembrance of his son .
But the adivasi used to Gather at hill top and worship the lord on the Makara sankaram by burning the fire and this was there annual feast they used to remember their beloved princes manikandan ( Ayyappan) which was a ritual to these tribal people practices by their ancestors.
This annual feast was stopped by Devasom board.
But tribal rituals like Guruthi pooja is still in practice performed by the tribal descendants at Malikapurthama premises.

Conclusion:

Only the Devasom board and forest officer knows the true fact. Its difficult to investigate and bring the truth to light. And we are not going to gain anything from this. But we can avoid the accidents happening and preserve the Tiger reservoir and the environment.
Any how many people go to sabarimala not because of this event. It’s the faith and belief that attracts so many Devotees. This is the only temple which has no cast, creed, religion etc.

Binu stands with the people who makes money out of ‘fake divine light’. 510,00,000 rupees now gone from the government treasure as compensation for the victims.

In 19th century 70% of Kerala State was of dense forest, 20th century it has come down to 50% and now dropped down to 28%. The tragedy took place in a place which is 30km away from Sabarimala temple and inside the protected Periyar Tiger Reserve forest.

Who has allowed that lakh of people to enter into that restricted area. Binu can go for a case against ‘those officials’ then try to file case against a person who try to bring the truth. You are a part of that mafia who were waiting for a chance to steal the left out forest resources.

Read between the lines: Politicians of major parties from Idukki, Pathanamthitta districts demands to provide more infrastructures in the restricted Reserve forest for the pilgrims. In that group MP and MLA’s exists.

Allowing access and providing infrastructure will lead to encroachment and deforestation of the left over dense forest. This is the other side of promoting this false belief.

Solution for crowd management and avoiding such a stampede again…

1. STOP the fake divine light
2. RESTRICT Sabarimala visit with ticket
3. DONT allow private vehicle through the restricted Reserve forest

It is the nature of human beings. I believe, like me, many people want to know the truth behind Makara Jyothi, because this is Kaliyuga, for everything we need proof (scientifically proof).

in 2009 i myself witnessed the crowd at Pullumedu on 14 th Jan.There is a lot of area which can accomodate several lakhs of devotees.But after the Jyothi, all devotees came down to the narrow path, narrow because of the temporary shops on both sides,.To pass through these way in between shops is very difficult.
I think the shops should allow on one side of the way so that the other side will be free for devotees.

And regarding Makarajyothi, which is already declared as ‘man made” by E.K .nayanar when was chief minister and also the Sabarimala thanthry ,and Panthalam palace had decalred that is lit by human beings.

It was a new information for me(am sure for many too) till I reach Dubai, that falcons can b trained and used, eventhogh this has been out there since 2000BC.

Makarajyothi is not man made and it is also not divine.It is a star like other stars which you can see in the sky .On the makarasankrama day Sun changes its position so that we can see that makara star very bright on these days.You can see that star even today (not only on 14 th jan).In Malayalam calender this month is called “Makaram ” which starts on makarasankrama day on which that star became more bright for us.

If more peoples aware of the secrets behind those black magics ,i hope the crowd may be less in future.If you see,out of 102 dead there was only 4 Malayalis,that means that all most all Kerala devotees know that is not a divine light.But the the devotees from out of Kerala may not got those truths and rush to see it at any cost.

I agree that falcons, Hawks can be trained, but the one appears is a Breed of eagle family called as Bhramin Kite ( Krishna Parnud). These birds are scavengers…. who have lost the hunting skills like there relativey Hawks….

Following the last tragedy in 1999, there was a debate in public space in which the truth behind ‘Makarajyothi’ was revealed. Two years ago, the thantri himself admitted that it was a man-made ‘jyothi’. Hence, all of us are supposed to know that. The debate had helped to create awareness among Keralites. Most of the devotees from Kerala know that Makaravilakku is not divine and hence there is no need to risk their lives to get a glimpse of it. But, lakhs of devotees who come every year from our neighbouring states are still under the impression that the flashing of camphor light inside the dark green woods at Ponnambalamedu is a heavenly act. Just look at the list of deceased. There are only five Keralaites among the 89 identified. This proportion applies to the number of devotees who throng every hill and tree on the trekking route to catch a glimpse of the ‘jyothi’.

It seems the government, the Travancore Devaswom Board and the media are collectively deceiving the poor devotees from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Most of them had spent their earnings for a year to make the trip.

The point i wanted to make was that why don’t the government or the TDB publish a white paper describing how Makarajyothi has been lit.

Let it be debated in the public space. Along with Keralites, let devotees from other states also know the truth. During the Makara Vilakku season, there can be announcements in Sannidhanam and Pampa in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu to clarify that ‘makaravilakku’ is a man-made jyothi and please do not make a mad rush to view it. There can be newspaper and television ads also across the south to create awareness among the public of the truth.

Thus we can escape ourselves from the sin of misleading poor Ayyappa devotees to a tragedy.

By doing so, Lord Ayyappa won’t be angry at all. In fact, he will only be happy to see that the lesser mortals at Sabarimala have finally learnt that they can never enhance the divinity of the Supreme

This is a well known fact in most part of the country, not only in Kerala. People come to see the Makajyothi not because of the belif that it is divine, but for Ayyappa. You can see the crowd in other temples like Madurai Meenakshi Temple during the Chitirai Festival, there is no miracle in that function. The problem with Sabarimala is, it is in a reserved forest, where proper arrangement can not be done, unlike in other temples like tirupathi, palani, etc. That is why these accidents happen. Govt. has to study ways to prevent this type of things in future (Both State and Central)

By visiting Sabarimala people will get a pleasant feeling because of the calm and cool NATURE. They feels a divine healing because of this NATURE – the basic concept of GOD in Hinduism is NATURE. Destroying that nature means sending out GOD from that place.

It is high time to protect the left over dense forest and security for the pilgrims. Solutions for that :

(a) Devaswam Board should publish a white paper stating that the light which appear in Ponnambalamedu is not divine and its man made – devotees will stop running behind that.

(b) RESTRICT the pilgrims by ADVANCED BOOKED TICKET on all important days

(c) Close all other roads inside the reserve forest during the festival season and allow only one access point – ie, PAMPA – verify the ticket from there and allow them to go to Sannidhanam

(e) STOP all private vehicles at Nilakkal and ALLOW only Government recognised CHAIN service from Nilakkal to PAMBA

(f) STOP all new concrete construction inside Poonkaavanam – the protected forest (now planning to spend another 120 crore)

(g) Don’t allow any vehicles and temporary shops during the festival season inside the forest area.

I hail from the same district in which Sabarimala is and about 6 KMs away from where the deity Ayyappan is believed to be brought up. I have never seen a single person from my locality go to Sabarimala to watch Makaravilakku. I believe this grave tragedy must initiate a fruitful debate in the social sphere of Kerala. For how long can we strive to create darkness by shutting our eyes?

Lets believe in what our mind says…………….but please dont get addcited to any religion since all the marketing and financial benfits for all these religious places are done by some so called high officials.Another way of politics.

Lot of people are making huge revenue with this pilgrim including muslims,hindus and christians.Think about the revenue erumeli muslim mosque is making and think about the hindu temples all over kerala make on behalf of sabirimala pilgrims.The total revenue for the state goverment during this time.

Did you know from nect year onwards you can remit offerings to ayyappan through online using credit cards wow amazing right…………..lets wake up and kick those religious maniacs in all religion who bluff people and utilising normal people beliefs to make money.

Any of muslim,hindu or christian religious leaders are not trying to upgrade the people,instead they want to be in safe position and make money.They all are joining hands when they want to bluff the normal people out there.Why cant we join together to say a big up yours to all those fake religious leaders and protoect our beliefs as normal human.

i was knowing these stuff from long time back from the police man who participated these activity….. but i tought it is a known truth for every one… , but after seeing the comments am wondering still we have many blind believers..

Am a god believer … i went to sabarimala 7 times.. [not in season , some malayala month first week] eventough i know these fake show.. i will go every year beacuse i still believe sabarimala is holly place and when we reached @ sanidhanam and kind of feeling that we are getting after seeing vigraham cant get from any other temple…

And about the eagle flying … that still remains mystery to me , but the same kind is happening in many temples.. for eg: in koduvayur [place near palakad] , during some particular occasion [am not remember the occastion i went there some 15 years back], eagle will come and fly around the temple for 3 times and it will go and i have seen from my own eyes….
i will be thankful if some body can clarify on the eagle , if anyone knows…

after seeing the tragedy in samarimala.. i think this is the right time govt should stop this non sense and admitt the truth openly….

The former dewaswam president also agreed that it is a man made lighting.

In court Devaswam board told that they not claim it as divine,but devotees are believed it as divine.

Hey dude hope you enjoyed the trip to ponnambal medu… but one question why did you not take video of the lighting of the jyothi itself. you have photographed the concrete slab where the jyothi is lighted… then either you went back all the way 500 meters climbed another hill and took the video of the the jyothi… can you do a favour, could you pls video what is inside the Kaba in mecca… heard there is a siva linga inside there… and also could you also post some of the videos about the things happening inside christian seminaries especially the vatican… that will be very intresting….

A good work Sinosh. Keeping a post live for more than 2 years is not an easy job. I go thruogh all comments and they are quiet interesting. The respectable, hounourable great gentlmen, fully devoted to god, having more faith in lord Ayyappa used filthy language against you with vengence and arrogance, while those who believe your camera never used a single word which hurt religious faith.
I get annoyed when the chief minister of kerala refuse to disclose anything about this magarajothi, even after the high cout ordered to reveal the truth. But now I understand, how his statement would affect his election fortunes.
Religious belief should be respected. In thiruvannamalai, karthigai deepam is lit by men using thousands of litres of ghee donated by devotees and knowing it is lit by men, lakhs of people have a dharshan of it every year. No one has the right to criticise it. Like this every devotee has the right to worship the ponnambalamedu deepam even it is man made. But why they want to stick on that it is divine. If they are adament, will they form a team and go to ponnambalamedu concrete platform on 14th january of 2012 and prove nothing is done there by men on that evening?

No Doubt. You have done a great job. Today (22 Jan 2011) the op ed page of Hindu daily says what you said in 2008. So congratulations…..

All religions are alike. They always stood against science. Remember what happened to Galilio. Islam is also like that. So we cannot expect anything good from religion. They always want to increase the number of devotees, amount of money they are getting. So they will tell fake stories and show these type of “magical deeds” for people to believe.

But……here the culprit is not religion!!! It is our government itself (that we all selected through votes!!!). Sabarimala is under the control of goverment. The money flowing into sabarimala is coming to state treasury. So our government was just supporting those hoax to gain more money and to attract more and more believers. Another thing is that this tragedy occured in the time of “communist” ministry. So they also proved that money and vote is far above than the things they said to believe (Karl marx or Lenin)

Religion and workship places are for the peace of mankind. Journey into Sabarimala is a very good experience. It will help one to control his mind after taking 41 days ‘vratham’. But that doesn’t mean that hoax have to be spread to attract more people. Sabarimala is also a place which stands for unity of different religion. So I hope that steps will be taken to improve the quality of sabarimala journey….not affecting the natural habitat.

Sinosh,

The origin of all religion was for the search for truth and peace. Great people created it. But it is running by frauds.

Devotees are of different kind

1) who still finds truth and peace and they don’t usually go behind all these hoax

2)these people believe blindly. They believe that god is there inside the statue. They offer large amount of money to temples and find peace from the belief that god will do everything right.

3)these people use religion for discrimination. Hindus…muslims….christians. They use filthy language against those who tells right words which is against their belief. They think that somethind will happen to their pride, if someone talk against their belief.

4) the most dangerous category. “theevravadikal”. These people use bombs or guns to make people believe what they believe.

The saddest part is that…even in this 21st century, the last 3 categories exist like that in 1000s of years back.

I really appreciate your efforts in unearthing the hoax and nothing new in the new revelation.
In fact, I vividly recall an article that appeared in the august India Today magazine way back in 1984. In that, Mr Venu Menon, the then special correspondent of the magazine based in Kerala on his quest to unravel this “Miracle” was confronted by Kerala Police and the officials of KSEB on their way to the place the so-called light appears and was not allowed to proceed beyond a certain point. His reasoning with them didn’t cut much ice as these officials had advanced many a lame excuses in not allowing him to proceed. Ultimately, he had to retreat empty handed. It is nothing but blind belief percolated down thru word of mouth and is continuing. Truth is bitter and everybody knows the truth but prefers to keep the lid close lest, it may hurt the religious belief.

I pity those who accuse you.

Whether jyothi is man made or by God, is the question. Even if it is man made, no problem. All Hindu, Christian and Muslim is worshipping only Stone statues, idols, pictures etc. fully knowing that they do not have real life. If stone is stone leave it, if it is God worship, likewise fire is fire leave it, fire is Deeparathana then pray. No body wants eloberation or probe. You are too hurry to make such a staement, and it is quite natural that mistakes happen if we are in hurry to prove something is wrong but not when the other way around

You should have looked at the picture of the vehicle above instead of copying details from “Miss” Sinosh’s reply to KC Krishna.
I doubt you go through the blog completely, just picked up what you want, in a hurry to prove somebody’s wrong.

The number of tata sumo given in the photo is KL-01-AD-8231. Sinosh made a small mistake by quoting it as KL-01-AD-8321. Binu repeated that same mistake. But when we give the original number in the website of Motor vehicles department, the owner name is the secretary, TDB. So Binu is helping to prove that Sinosh is right.

Anyway….I think now it is time to ignore people like Binu. Is he not living here? Dont he read news papers? Even the sabarimala thanthri told all these words. No one here told anything bad about any religion. No one told anything bad about sabarimala ayyappan. Only thing Sinosh told is that makaravilakku is man made.

Dear Binu if you truly believe in god…..please dont go behind all these hoaxes. We doesn’t need these type of magics to believe god.

Thank you for sharing the link, You are right that KL-01-AD-8321 is a motor bike, but KL-01-AD-8231 is a TATA SUMO owned by the TDB please click here for the registration details ( courtesy to a friend of mine working with police,who have portal access in MVD) and you can see that more information is available to the registered official , than an user accessing the portal.

Guys,

The very ideal behind people visiting places of worship is to get peace of mind. Be it any place from Sabarimala to Mecca. Its all the same. Each person who visits has his own conception of devotion and blessing he gets while visiting there. The Makaravilaku/Makarajyothi occasion is marked special as there are special Poojas performed on that day and the citing of the Divine Star in the sky. The rush at Sabarimala during that time of the year is also because of the main fact that it is the mark of the closing of Sabarimala shrine after the ‘Mandalakalam’. When such evidences are open before our very eyes we should not be focusing to prove somebody/someone wrong but to tell the concerned authorities to provide more amenities and facilities to the devotees who throng the shrine at that time.

Just by proving some belief wrong may bring joy to someone but the ultimate truth is the Peace of mind that you get on visiting the shrine after the long term of ‘Vratham’(divine fasting) cannot be achieved in any other similar places of worship.

So, dear countrymen lets turn the focus on the development of the nation rather than highlighting her pitfalls. This is India, the unique land of so many religions and beliefs like no other.

Nice reading your article. First of all try to know the difference between Makara Jyothi and Makara Vilakku. Makara Jyothi appears at the particular auspicious time in the sky and Makara Vilakku is what we get to see in Ponambalamedu.

- Regarding Makara Vilakku, this has been happening for ages before any type of communication was ever invented and still it has been happening exactly after the Thiruabaranam is put on Lord Ayyappan’s idol and Deeparadhana is completed. Pls explain how this was happening in those times (if u have not visited let me tell u Sabarimala is situated in a dense forest surrounded by hills)

-Regarding Makara Jyothi, this auspicious star appears exactly on this day and if you want to watch this from ur terrace u can. Then all of us should quit going to Temple, Mosque or Church because GOD is everywhere and u can pray from your house. What I mean is, witnessing some thing’s or events from the Place of Worship really makes us feel special.

-Regarding the Krishna Parunthu flying around – this happens not only in Sabarimala but whenever a auspicious event takes place in a Temple we can witness this. If u have a chance of seeing Kumbabishekam of any Temple u can notice that once the Holy water is being poured on the Kumbam of the Temple u can see Krishna Parunthu appearing from no where and circling the Temple 3 times and disappearing.

Once again i knew Makara Vilakku was being shown by some Tribals as a part of some ritual for ages (but don’t no what is happening now). But we have to give a thought about the timing of this event at those times as mentioned above.

Still Lord Ayyappan and Sabarimala is always special and very close to my heart.

I still firmly believe atleast for most of them visiting Sabarimala, Lord Ayyappa is much much bigger than Makaya Vilakku or Makara Jyothi.

This is an intense, rigorous, ego-quelling and soul-cleansing process, an essential prerequisite to make any such pilgrimage special, whatever the religion! This is definitely what makes the Sabarimala pilgrimage so meaningful, not viewing the supposedly divine Makara Jyothi in hysterical mode.

The physical and spiritual cleansing, conquering of one’s ego and inner strength that one feels when the 41-day vratham is honestly followed, has to be experienced to be believed! It’s presumptuous for those who don’t sincerely attempt it to criticize it, when they have no inkling of what they’re talking about!

Yes i went through the link and it was informative.

But as i mentioned in my previous post, “Then all of us should quit going to Temple, Mosque or Church because GOD is everywhere and u can pray from your house”.

I repeat, doing or observing many things in our life from proper place makes us feel special and different. Eg. here in gulf there are many staying without their family….although they love their family but still it makes a difference staying with your parents, wife and seeing your children grow. But unless we experience it we are never going to understand what we miss.

Once again if you take to consideration the total number of people visiting Sabarimala on 40 days (also there are people visiting on the start of every month) and on the day of Makara Jyothi, definitely we can understand more people come there for the faith they have on Lord Ayyappan and not Makara Jyothi.

Again i support your case of need for development in Sabarimala and the total ignorance from the part of our gov.’s inspite of generating so much revenue.

There is some Physicist among the comments, who Rant about some “physics of luminosity”.

“Conservation of luminosity” would be more apt phrase.

And, Camera sensor works different from Human Eye.
The BROADCAST EQUIPMENT and his CONSUMER CAMERA could differ in :
(1)Dynamic Range of sensor
(2)Signal amplification (pedestal value / knee / black value )
(3)Compression artifacts
(4)RGB subsampling ratios (4:4:4)~
(5)Amount of light that can be transmitted by lens [like f1.4 / f5.6 aperture]
(6)Sensor size, Pixel density, sensitivity of individual photocells and much more parameters.

In short, different genre cameras should not be compared in the same scale.

Kudos to Sinosh. Spirituality is beyond bloody irresponsible business. I have a grandma who says you are send by Ayyappa to prevent corruption by priests

My Grandpa pass away on 1999 June 9 till that day he haven’t believed man landed in in Moon He was 113 but as there was no birth records found of him we believed he was only 99 in 1999.He used to say no way people can walk on land even in water where there is surface how can in air damn nonsense.Do you believe the same.

I took, around half hour to read all these comments. I understood that only one or two persons have the exact idea about these matter. If any one want to reveal or teach or to disclose about any matter he must get a good knowledge from different ways and from different periods before he publish it.
Around 30 years before i heard all these discussion, From most of the old people i got a good idea about Makaravilakku. i concluded here as..
Makaravilakku is a manmade one as all old people know this.
in the older days in Ponnambalamedu there was a small gathering by adivasis to worship god.
when they hear the chime of the bell at the time of nada open on the makaravilakku day as adivasis has good knowledge era and timings , they do big fire for their respond to God and show happiness and the output of the happiness comes out like big fire.
And another thing the older people never says that this is a miracle. But the some ‘mulakudi maaratha’ payyanmar pazhaya karyangale kurich padikkathe oronnu ezhunnellichukollum.
in older days more people released these type of pictures with good clarity than this with the fact that makaravilakku is manmade and it is not miracle.

I think Makaravilakku is a Miracle and not manmade. Its only god appearing in the form of light. Three times. It is not fire as you can see the color is bright white ( not yellowish) and appears 3 times.

Hats off for the efforts Sinosh. I’ve heard a lot about this from my best friends grandpa who has worked in KSEB, has has personally been involved in the fire lighting process. Nice to see the place and pictures. Will definitely pay a visit there one day.

Excellent work Sinosh, I remember the days I stayed along with my father at Moozhiyar, Kakki and Pamba during early 90s. I got the opportunities couple of time to visit Ponnmbalamedu. One in 1990 and second time in 92. The place in your snaps are still in my reminiscent. I was there on a Sabarimala season. I use to see cops and TDB officials arrived for litting the lamp, their preparations etc etc. Unfortunately my dad was also a Govt official to organize this.

This show will go on always, these stupid people (even educated) will go along with that and govt make money out of this. Both belief and alcohol is serving the same. Both are Govt’s source of revenue and tragedies are usual. What is the difference between a Hooch tragedy and this one happened at Pullumedu ?
